China opens world’s highest civilian airport

China Highest AirportChina has begun commercial operations at the world’s highest civilian airport in a bid to boost tourism and tighten political control over the country’s restive west.

The Daocheng Yading Airport is situated at an elevation of 4,411 meters above sea level. Prior to this, Banda Airport in Tibet, which is situated at an altitude of 4,334 meters, was the highest civilian airport in the world.

The runway Daocheng Yading is 4,200 meters. As the airport is situated at an high altitude, airport authorities have warned passengers of light-headedness and other symptoms of altitude sickness on arrival.

According to Chinese media, flights from the new airport will travel time from Daocheng Yading to Sichuan’s provincial capital of Chengdu from two days by bus to just 65 minutes. The region is often referred to as the gateway to Tibet.
